The power of the microbiome: The key to our health

Amel Taibi (PhD Research Associate Department of Nutritional Sciences, University of Toronto, ON)
The gut microbiome refers to the genetic material of all the microbes, including bacteria, fungi, and viruses that live symbiotically on and inside our digestive tracts. These microbes have been involved with different activities in the host, including digestion and nutrition, synthesis of vitamins and protection from pathogens. Diet and other environmental factors play an important role in modulating the gut microbiome which in turn can control health and disease.

What to feed your brain

Richard Bazinet (Associate Professor Canada Research Chair in Brain Lipid Metabolism
 University of Toronto
 Department of Nutritional Sciences)
Believe it or not, but your brain is very hungry and fat.  However, unlike your body fat
the brain is made up of special omega-3 fats that are commonly found in fish.  This talk
will summarise how our food supply has shifted away from omega-3 fat towards
omega-6 fats.  I will also discuss the implications of this shift for nutrition and the brain.
