Smart Farm technology employs information/communications
technology (ICT) in agriculture to raise productivity/quality within the cultivation process. The convergence of the new technology and agricultural practice has allowed the Opaskwayak Cree Nation (OCN, Manitoba) to operate an indoor vertical Smart Farm on its reserve. Limited access to a healthy diet/food choices has been a issue in Northern communities. This Smart Farm system may motivate people to change their food consumption habits by offering more affordable fresh and ‘funcitional’ vegetables that can combat chronic diseases.

Grandma was right: peas are good for you

High carbohydrate foods can cause a spike in blood sugar. According to Health Canada, lowering blood sugar levels after a meal by at least 20% is good for your health. Could peas, which are high in fibre and protein, help keep blood sugar levels steadier after a meal? We tested peas with rice/instant potato and in muffins, chili and soup and found that
blood sugar levels were lowered by more than 20%. So, Grandma was right: eat your peas.
