There's nothing better than a beer to get the conversation flowing! But what if technology could also help you learn a new language?

Seeing speech: Using ultrasound technology to teach and learn pronunciation

Rae Anne Baker (Master’s Student, Linguistics, Simon Fraser University and Hul’q’umi’num’ Language Academy)
Sonya Bird (Associate Professor, Linguistics, University of Victoria)
This presentation will introduce ultrasound imaging as a tool for helping
learners see how their tongue moves around in their mouth as they produce
speech sounds. Discussion will focus on how we have been using
ultrasound imaging in the context of Hul’q’umi’num’ (Salish) language
revitalization. Hul’q’umi’num’ has 37 consonants, 21 of which do not occur
in English. Figuring out how to pronounce them all is no easy task! By
visualizing their tongues and those of their Elders, Hul’q’umi’num’ learners
can master some of the trickier sounds of their language.

Tewaweyentéhta'n: Let’s learn together! Making software to assist teaching and learning Iroquoian languages.

Anna Kazantseva (Ph.D Research Officer, National Research Council Canada)
Most Indigenous languages in Eastern and Central Canada are very verb-
centric. Basically, what takes a sentence to express in French or English
can often be said in one word in Cree (an Algonquian language) or in
Mohawk (an Iroquoian language). The title of this talk means let all of you
and me learn together. And this is a rather short word in the Mohawk
language Kanyen’kéha. In this talk, I will describe a tool that helps students
learn the very complex rules of forming verbs in the language.
