Alien Worlds: Exploring the Diversity of Exoplanets

Nick Cowan (Assistant Prof of Physics and of Earth & Planetary Sciences at McGill)
Planet hunters have already discovered thousands of planets orbiting other stars, so-called exoplanets. We now know that planets outnumber stars in the Galaxy. Yet the eight planets in our Solar System are not typical. I will give a whirlwind tour of the newly-discovered classes of planets—hot Jupiters, lava planets, super-Earths and waterworlds—with an emphasis on how we detect and measure winds, clouds and molecules on planets
hundreds of light-years away.

Chasing Water on Mars using Lasers

Debarati Das (McGill PhD student )
@DebaratiDas44
My research focuses on measuring boron in the rocks of Gale crater to understand ancient water activity on Mars. Boron, a highly water-soluble element, tells us about Martian habitability through water properties and composition. I use data collected by the laser on the Curiosity rover to identify new boron-rich areas. I also study Martian
geochemistry using terrestrial examples. I will analyze samples from Death Valley using instruments similar to the rover’s to understand processes that caused boron enrichment on Mars.
