Bacteria have lived with us for millions of years. We often live peacefully together, but from time to time bacteria cause infection that requires antibiotic treatment. Some bacteria
are outright aggressive pathogens that invade our cells. I will present a glimpse of what we do to study one such pathogen. The manipulation of these organisms thanks to the DNA revolution has made studying them truly accessible and is helping to understand how infection and our own cells work

Ebola virus at the gates; strategies to stop viral infection

While the natural hosts of Ebola virus are presumably bats, it can occasionally spillover to humans and cause highly lethal outbreaks of hemorrhagic fevers. Ebola virus has evolved an intricate mechanism to invade our cells in order to establish infection, replicate, and produce thousands of progeny viruses and overwhelm our army of immune cells. But as we learn more about how the virus enters cells, we can devise strategies to prevent infection and give our immune system a fighting chance.
