Lichen are more than just "that green stuff": uncovering the tiny world living all around

Yolanda Wiersma (Full Professor Department of Biology)
In this talk, Dr. Wiersma, a landscape ecologist, will take you on a tour of the micro-scaled landscape of lichens. She'll introduce you to some of the fascinating diversity of lichens that we have in the province, ranging from the common "city lichens" to our world-renowned cyanolichens living in our old-growth forests.

Exploring the aquaculture of an unknown superhero: the sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa.

Guillaume Caulier (Research assistant Department of Ocean Sciences)
Sea cucumbers are probably the most misunderstood superheroes in the tree of life. Did you know that they could produce glue and chemical weapons? This interactive seminar will describe some of their unique biological properties and how they interact with their ecosystem. Who knows, you will maybe change your mind for these invertebrates and might want to taste them! This is why we will also focus on their potential aquaculture in Newfoundland!
