The Earth and the oceans have many secrets to reveal. Come enjoy a beer and listen to what they have to tell us.

Ocean eavesdropping: using sound to study right whales

Hansen Johnson (PhD student in Oceanography at Dalhousie University)
Right whales could be extinct in 20 years. Protecting them requires knowing where they are – a difficult task considering the population of ~400 can range from Florida to Iceland. Right whales use sound to communicate over long ranges. We eavesdrop on their conversations to learn more about these whales and how they move around the ocean. This talk will describe how we do this, what we’re learning, and how we hope the results will help the species.

Sick soil: How keeping our soil healthy will save the world

Carolyn Marshall (Post-Doctoral Researcher Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture)
The concept of soil health is hard to define and even harder to measure.
But with 95% of our food being supplied by soil-based agriculture, it’s a
good idea to know if our soil is up to the task of keeping us fed. I’ll be talking
about some of the challenges soil is facing, both globally and here in the
Atlantic region, and what we can do to keep our soil healthy and producing
food for generations to come.

Oceanography and Naval Sonar: What’s New with UWSU?

Peter Giles (Chief Engineer for Naval Sonar, General Dynamics Mission Systems Canada)
The Royal Canadian Navy’s Underwater Warfare Suite Upgrade (UWSU) will upgrade, replace, or supplement all of the sonar equipment on the Halifax-class frigates. This presentation will discuss how the project is incorporating oceanographic research and development to help meet the Navy’s requirements.
