Extended Reality Interfaces for Musical Expression and Learning

David Johnson (Ph.D. Candidate in Computer Science, University of Victoria)
Music and technology have always been inextricably linked, whether it's the
evolving needs of musicians driving technological advances or new
technology driving new techniques for musical interaction. Extended Reality
(XR) is one set of emerging technologies, including Augmented Reality
(AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR), that has the potential to
create new forms of musical interaction by extending the musical
experience. In this talk, I will discuss my research on XR and it's potential
change the way music is learned and performed through virtual simulation

A curious history of music technology through the ages

George Tzanetakis (Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in the Computer Analysis of Audio and Music)
Technology has shaped the way music is created, distributed, and
consumed throughout history. In this talk I will tell a few fascinating stories
about the complex and in many cases unusual interplay between music and
technology. With topics ranging from the ancient hydraulis, the ancestor of
keyboards and organs to virtual pop stars and music robots we will explore
all facets of music technology in understandable, non-technical language.
